This Elva Courier Mk III was ordered in February 1963 by Roland Ron Lutz, an American engineer living in France It was delivered in April 1963. It was ordered as a purpose built 2 liter GT race car. It won the Coup DOro at the Prix du Paris an FIA 2 liter GT race in September 1963. Two weeks later it won the Auvergne Cup at Claremont-Ferrand. The Elva subsequently participated in the non-championship Le Mans Time Trials. It is covered in the book Elva: The Cars, the People, the History. The Elva was recovered from a swamp in Georgia in 1989 and was restored by Terry Peterson . In 1991 Terry Peterson raced the car with some success, including an appearance in the 1994 Monterey Historic Races, the first of many appearances for this Courier. In 1995 it was sold to Ted Gildred, whose wife Heidi drove it occasionally. In February 2005 Bud Byrnes acquired the Elva Courier and campaigned the the car with great success winning the Reno Historic races and several other races that year and was accepted for the first of his six Monterey Historic Races in 2006. In 2013 at the inaugural SVRA National Championship held at the Circuit of the Americas Bud Byrnes was awarded the Best Production Based Race Car by the SVRA and Vintage Motorsports magazine! The car was completely rebuilt in 2014.. The 1,800 cc MGB engine was rebuilt by noted MG racer Kent Prather. It produces 183 bhp on the dyno. (Prather is the winner of six SCCA National Championships with his MGA!) It has a straight cut close ratio 3 synchro 4 speed racing gear box. The rear axle was replaced by an MGB unit with a racing limited slip differential and larger 10 drum brakes. The front brakes remain 9 MGB disc. The entire suspension completely re-bushed. and all the suspension parts were checked and crack tested. The car comes complete with the original windscreen and mounding post as well as the convertible top and side curtains; an extensive spares package is included.
